TrailblazHER Award

-        TrackGirlz is a 501c3 nonprofit organization empowering girls through track and field. In partnership with TrackGirlz, AAU Track & Field now offers special access to TrackGirlz empowerment programs that feature Olympians, elite coaches and  industry leaders, giving girls access to mentorship and expert performance education.

-        Through their grassroots grant program, TrackGirlz supports girls' direct participation in track and field in their local communities by removing monetary and material barriers, such as track club membership fees, travel costs, and  training equipment.

At this time we are recognizing two incredible coaches with a strong commitment to leadership, athletic development and higher education through track and field.

JEAN E. BELL (JEUNESS TRACK CLUB- HEAD COACH)

Coach Jean Bell is someone who understands the importance of sports in education and life.

For almost four decades she has been helping girls reach their dreams. Thanks to her hard work, the Jeuness Track Club Inc., which she founded in 1985, is now a significant part of the local Brooklyn community.

TAMEKA RODRIGUEZ - (HEAD COACH FRISCO JETS ELITE)

Coach Tameka Rodriguez is the head coach Frisco Jets Elite Track club,

in Frisco, TX. Her program is dedicated to providing a way for our youth to learn skills that can be applied to every aspect of their lives.

To date, her team has assisted over 67 youth athletes in obtaining athletic scholarships and has plans to increase the number of scholarship recipients each year.

Each of their teams have had the opportunity to take part in TrackGirlz empowerment programs and benefit from the TrackGirlz Grassroot Grant program.  Today we present each of you with the TrackGirlz TrailblazHER Award as a token of our appreciation for your contributions toward creating a path for girls in sport through track and field. And presenting the award is AAU Track & Field Chairman Charles Oliver and AAU Track & Field National Secretary Karen Hall.

Award Presentation Notes

The AAU track and field awards recognize outstanding contributions by coaches and clubs toward the development of youth athletes across America.  Awards are given based on work and accomplishments during the prior calendar year.

2020 was a particularly challenging year for us all.  The stresses and demands of the Covid-19 pandemic forced coaches and clubs alike to be creative in unprecedented ways to keep athletes safe during training and competition.  Still, coaches, clubs, officials, parents and families all banded together like never before to support our youth.

Awards are given to coaches, clubs and officials.

Coach of the Year

One coach from each of the four Zones across the country is recognized as the Zone Coach of the Year and one of the zone winners is selected as the National Coach of the year.

·       As always, selection is an extremely difficult decision because of the great work done by coaches across the country.

Zone A

·       This coach took her duties beyond the track.  Faced with restrictions on training and competition facilities, this coach took her efforts to City and County officials.

·       On the track she re-organized her practice sessions into small groups to allow for social distancing.

·       She encouraged her parents and athletes to join or renew their AAU memberships early so they could participate when entries were limited.

·       She organized virtual training sessions and chat groups for parents to support each other and each other’s children with virtual schooling.

·       The Zone A winner, from the New Jersey Supersonics, is Charlene Hunter-Cumberbatch.

Zone B

·       This coach’s athletes won 4 individual national championship events, 2 national relay events, 21 All-American medals and swept the 13-year-old girls’ sprint and middle-distance events.

·       Pandemic restrictions meant that church parking lots and open grass fields would become this coach’s training ground.  Frequent hand-washing and mobile sanitizing stations became a regular part of the tool kit.

·       Organizing community food drives, mask drives and donation of used athletic shoes to underprivileged kids abroad occupied the time off the track.

·       This year’s Zone B winner, from Five-Star-General Athletics in Florida, is Haile Hoo.

Zone C

·       This coach is recognized as much for her inspiration of athletes off the track as on it.  Several of her athletes went to college on athletic scholarships.

·       She took to Zoom to educate parents about keeping athletes safe during the pandemic.

·       When faced with no competitions, she hosted them herself to provide competition opportunities for her athletes.

·       While some restrict their involvement to the track, this coach’s tireless efforts continue in XC season and indoor track.

·       The Zone C winner, from Rush Athletics in Illinois, is Nicole Lincoln.

She won this award in the inaugural year, three years ago. The 2021 AAU National Coach of the Year is Nicole Lincoln.

Club of the Year

Zone A

·       This club recently celebrated its 10th birthday and was recognized in some local publications for its contribution to keeping safe and active during the pandemic.

·       This club’s playbook over the past year included social media platforms for virtual training and information sessions on college admissions and other topics.

·       Pandemic notwithstanding, this club partnered with local civic associations to support local small businesses, conduct food drives and distribute Covid protection gear and supplies.

·       Their virtual training extended to 5 and 6 year olds.

·       The Zone A Club of the Year, is Dale City Lightning Track Club.

Zone B

·       This club performed so well at the 2020 national championships it was recognized by a local business and local television for its achievements.

·       Free training sessions via Zoom was part of the toolkit for this club also.

·       The services of a therapist to support athletes with life struggles they may face away from the track rounds out this club’s holistic approach to training.

·       Twice a year the club serves the homeless in its community with its “Feed the Homeless” program.

·       Away from the track, athletes receive free ACT/SAT tutoring.

·       For the second consecutive year, the Zone B Club of the Year, from New Orleans, is Sprint NOLA Track Club.

Zone C

·       11 of this club’s athletes received All-American awards at the AAU 14 and under indoor championship.

·       During practices, this club used distance markers and cones as visual cues for athletes to social distance.

·       When there was no competition, this club create its own by hosting intra-club competition.  And just to make it fun and involve the whole family, parents were invited to wear green for the St Patrick’s Day competition and red, white and blue for the July 4th competition.

·       The Zone C Club of the Year is Kenosha Shock Waves.

The 2021 AAU National Club of the Year Award goes to Sprint NOLA Track Club.

Mary Sparn Official of the Year

None of the competitions, XC or T&F would be possible without the tireless efforts of officials who volunteer their time, energy and expertise to make the high level of competition possible.

·       This official has demonstrated her thorough knowledge of the rules of competition and applied them diligently, fairly, and always very inconspicuously in the background.

·       She is particularly known for assisting parents who are new to AAU to navigate what  can seem like the daunting process of registration and getting involved with competition for the first time.

·       She exemplifies the values of an AAU official by encouraging athletes to have fun and enjoy the competition experience.

·       The world of track and field competition among youth would be difficult if not impossible without the unwavering contributions of officials like this year’s winner.

The Mary Sparn Official of the Year award winner is Danette Young-Stone.
