Mary
Sparn Official of the Year
None
of the competitions, XC or T&F would be possible without the tireless
efforts of officials who volunteer their time, energy and expertise to make the
high level of competition possible. The winner has served AAU for over 23
years.
·
She served at the District, Regional and
National levels.
·
She demonstrated her thorough knowledge
of the rules of competition and applied them diligently, fairly, and always
very inconspicuously in the background.
·
Sometimes doing her job well meant
advocating for athletes, sometimes consoling them, listening and responding to
parents and coaches.
·
In short, this person exemplified all
the values of an AAU official.
·
The world of track and field competition
lost a giant when we lost this official a few months ago.
The
Mary Sparn Official of the Year award is presented
posthumously to Janis Henderson.
