Coach of the Year

·         One coach from each of the four Zones across the country is recognized as the Zone Coach of the Year and one of the zone winners is selected as the National Coach of the year.

·         As always, selection is an extremely difficult decision because of the great work done by coaches across the country.

Zone A

·         This coach’s athletes set indoor records in the 400m and 60m as well as the 4x200m and the 4x400m.

·         He received the USATF Coach of the Year award in his State and received a citizen’s award from his local City Council.

·         His athletes understand and follow his strict “no grades, no run” philosophy.

·         Off the track, he leads his club in food drives for local food pantries and socks and clothing drives for the homeless.

·         The winner in Zone A is James Wilkerson.

Zone B

·         Last year this coach’s athletes included two State champions, one of whom “three-peated” as the HJ champion.

·         He also took 20 athletes to AAU Club Championships and took home 15 medals.

·         Off the track, he is works tirelessly with inner city youth and organizes food and clothing drives for the homeless in his community.

·         This year’s Zone B winner is Nile Legania.

Zone C

·         This coach started a club in 1988 with ten athletes.  Today there are more than 100 members.

·         Since 1988, hundreds of athletes have passed through his tutelage and gone on to achieve local, regional, Collegiate and professional success, including a 2016 Olympic gold medal.

·         He has served his community by coaching and assisting at several high school and junior high school athletes and assisting more than 60 athletes in obtaining College scholarships.

·         The Zone C winner is Thomas Boatright.

Zone D

·         This coach owns and operates a specialty running store and uses it as a conduit to reach youth athletes whom he coaches and mentors in road running, XC and track events.

·         Athletes can participate in his club without charge.

·         Most of his successes have come in XC running in which he has produced multiple national champions.

·         Throughout the year he hosts several all-comers meets giving local athletes the opportunity for competition.

·         The Zone C winner is Willie Harmatz.

The 2020 AAU National Coach of the Year Award goes to James Wilkerson.

Club of the Year

Zone A

·         Athletes in this club broke the 4x200m record for their age group at Millrose Games, the girls’ HJ record at the Colgate Games and the boys’ HJ record at the 2019 JO Games.

·         13 athletes took home medals at last year’s JO Games.

·         The club was recognized by the City of Wilmington as an outstanding youth club.

·         Athletes from this club earned a combined $600K in academic and athletic scholarships to very prestigious Colleges.

·         Off the track, the club donated over 200 toys to the local Toys for Tots program and hundreds of socks, hats and scarves to the homeless in their community.

·         No one is denied club entry based on lack of finances.

·         The Zone A Club of the Year, from Zone 2 in the mid-Atlantic is Delaware Elite Track Club.

Zone B

·         21 of this club’s 24 athletes at the 2019 AAU Club Championship took home medals and earned the club recognition by a local business for outstanding performance at the national level.

·         The club serves its local community by offering free Saturday training/exercise sessions.

·         Off the track, and with the club’s support, parents and athletes volunteer in several local youth programs.

·         Twice a year the club serves the homeless in its community with its “Feed the Homeless” program.

·         Also away from the track, athletes receive free ACT/SAT tutoring.

·         The Zone B Club of the Year, from Zone 24 in New Orleans is NOLA Sprint Track Club.

The 2020 AAU National Club of the Year Award goes to Delaware Elite Track Club.

Mary Sparn Official of the Year

None of the competitions, XC or T&F would be possible without the tireless efforts of officials who volunteer their time, energy and expertise to make the high level of competition possible. The winner has served AAU for over 23 years.

·         She served at the District, Regional and National levels.

·         She demonstrated her thorough knowledge of the rules of competition and applied them diligently, fairly, and always very inconspicuously in the background.

·         Sometimes doing her job well meant advocating for athletes, sometimes consoling them, listening and responding to parents and coaches.

·         In short, this person exemplified all the values of an AAU official.

·         The world of track and field competition lost a giant when we lost this official a few months ago.

The Mary Sparn Official of the Year award is presented posthumously to Janis Henderson.
